This Week in Polygamy News — October 4, 2026

Your weekly roundup of what's happening in the worlds we talk about every week — Sister Wives, the FLDS, and the broader conversation around polygamy and high-control groups. We summarize the week's reporting below; all credit for the original stories belongs to the journalists and outlets linked under each item.

Sister Wives Season 21 premieres tonight — without Kody and Robyn

After 16 years, Sister Wives returns tonight (October 4, 10 p.m. ET on TLC) with its biggest cast change ever: Kody and Robyn Brown are not returning. TLC confirmed the departure with a title card in the season 21 trailer, and the new season follows Christine, Janelle, and Meri as they move forward separately.

According to TV Insider, neither Kody, Robyn, nor TLC has publicly explained the exit — fan theories range from contract negotiations to the couple stepping away from the spotlight, but that's speculation. What we know from the trailer: Janelle said she was "flabbergasted" by the news, Christine admitted she didn't know how to process it, and Meri said she was "actually surprised." The season also follows Janelle's new relationship with her boyfriend Pete and includes a return to Flagstaff for a memorial for Janelle and Kody's late son Garrison, who died in 2024 (Memorable TV).

Janelle's new boyfriend Pete makes his TV debut

People reports that Janelle's boyfriend Pete appears on camera this season — and there's a sweet detail: where Kody famously always claimed the hotel luggage rack for himself (Christine says he did it on their honeymoon and never stopped), Pete pulled out the rack and put Janelle's suitcase on it. Christine told People she immediately texted Janelle a photo when her own husband David did the same thing.

20 years since Warren Jeffs was captured

August 28, 2006 — twenty years ago — Warren Jeffs was pulled over on Interstate 15 outside Las Vegas after two years on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Wikipedia's account of the arrest notes troopers found wigs, disguises, and more than $55,000 in cash in the vehicle. Jeffs was convicted in Texas in 2011 of sexual assault of a child and sentenced to life plus 20 years; his earliest parole eligibility is July 2038 (Bustle, People).

Marking the anniversary, the Dr. Phil Podcast released an episode, "Polygamist Prophet Warren Jeffs Captured: 20 Years Later," revisiting the case — including Dr. Phil's own history with two teenage girls who escaped the FLDS in the mid-2000s.

From our channel: our Twelve Tribes trailer reaction

This one's ours — we reacted to the trailer for the new Twelve Tribes documentary, and Sam kept seeing his own FLDS upbringing in it: one man speaking for God, families torn apart, children harmed, abuse hidden inside a closed community.
